The International School of Monaco is seeking to appoint a motivated and experienced Director of Health, Safety, Risk and Compliance. This position is available from December 2025.
Position Overview
The Director of Health and Safety, Risk Management, and Compliance will serve as a key member of the Senior Executive Leadership Team, reporting to the Whole School Director, championing a culture of safety, compliance, and risk awareness across the school community. This pivotal role is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors whilst maintaining compliance with local, national, and international regulations. The Director will oversee risk assessments, educational visits, safety protocols, and the implementation of policies that align with global best practices and ethical standards.
Key Responsibilities
Health and Safety
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures aligned with international best practices and local regulations.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments across all school facilities to identify and address potential hazards.
- Oversee the development and execution of emergency response plans, including fire drills, lockdown procedures, and crisis management strategies.
- Collaborate with medical staff to ensure first aid, health services, and infection control measures meet required standards.
- Maintain detailed records of health and safety audits, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety laws, regulations, and school accreditation standards.
- Promote a strong safety culture by encouraging proactive identification and mitigation of risks by all members of the school community.
Risk Management
- Responsible for the implementation of the risk management policy across all aspects of school life.
- Responsible for the regular review and update of all school risk registers to ensure highest standards of regulatory compliance.
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks across all school operations, including facilities, events, and activities.
- Lead risk management initiatives, providing staff training and implementing preventive measures to reduce liability.
- Manage and oversee the organization of all educational visits, ensuring safety protocols are followed and risks are minimized.
- Develop and review emergency response plans and safety protocols for off-site activities.
- Ensure the school maintains adequate insurance coverage for activities, property, and personnel.
Compliance
- Monitor compliance with local labor laws, building codes, environmental standards, and other regulatory requirements.
- Ensure that the school keeps up to date with all local and national regulatory requirements.
- Monitor compliance with all wellbeing and safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Ensure adherence to international education accreditation standards, policies, and guidelines.
- Establish and maintain an up-to-date, secure whole-school policy storage system in collaboration with King’s College School, Wimbledon.
- Oversee the regular review and updating of policies in line with the policy review cycle, ensuring they are consistently implemented across all departments.
- Conduct periodic whole-school compliance reviews and provide detailed reports to leadership and Board of Trustees, as appropriate.
Training and Communication
- Develop and deliver training programs for staff, students, and stakeholders on health, safety, risk management, and compliance procedures.
- Communicate effectively with the school community regarding health and safety updates, risk mitigation strategies, and policy changes.
- Leadership and Coordination
- Chair the Health and Safety Committee and coordinate with relevant departments to address safety and compliance concerns.
- Act as the primary liaison with regulatory authorities, accreditation agencies, and emergency response organizations.
- Stay informed of emerging trends, technologies, and changes in regulations to ensure the school remains proactive in maintaining safety and compliance.
- Oversight of the school’s external providers who support extra-curricular activities to include contracts and compliance.
Essential Qualities and Skills
- Proven experience in health and safety management, risk assessment, and compliance, ideally in an educational or international environment.
- Strong knowledge of local and international health, safety, and compliance regulations.
- Excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
- Ability to analyze complex situations and develop practical, effective solutions.
- Certification in occupational health and safety (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) or equivalent.
- Proficiency in incident management systems and risk assessment tools.
Desirable Qualities and Skills
- Experience working in an international school or multicultural environment.
- Familiarity with international accreditation standards (e.g., CIS, MSA, IB).
- Advanced qualifications in risk management, occupational safety, or a related field.
- Experience conducting workshops or delivering professional development.
- Multilingual abilities to support effective communication within a diverse community, particularly French.
