Black Lives Matter
The killing of George Floyd in Minnesota, USA, has rightly sparked global outrage and despair. It has reminded us yet again of the deep-rooted racism and discrimination that still exists in our society. Today, I want to say clearly that the International School of Monaco stands steadfastly with the Black and Minority Ethnic community and condemns racism and discrimination in any form.
At ISM we celebrate the diversity of our community. Nevertheless, we must not imagine that we cannot do more to be part of the solution to this injustice.
We can all do more.
We shall look again at the curriculum right across the school to ensure that our community is well-informed, anti-racist and inclusive. We shall listen to the experiences of our students and former students and seek their advice on how we can do things better. We shall never be complacent, knowing that we can always improve.
We bear in mind the words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu who said, “if you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” It is not enough to be simply not racist or discriminatory. We must instead adopt a pro-active, anti-racist and anti-discrimination stance. We resolve to do this so that all members of our community feel equal and included.
