At ISM, we begin the counseling process in class 10. Students need to realize that US colleges will be looking at every grade on their transcript, beginning in class 10 and the UK places great emphasis on IGCSE results. Academic performance in years 10 and 11 form the basis for the student to enter successfully the IB program in year 12. An overview is given of the university application process and students are encouraged to read widely and become involved in significant extra-curricular activities, if they are not already doing so.
As students enter class 11, they are encouraged to focus on their IGCSE’s and those considering the US will take the October PSAT exam. Extra- curricular activities should be continued and opportunities to grow in leadership should be sought. All students in class 11 will be involved in a two week work-experience placement after the summer exams and they are offered the possibility to partake in Euroquest, a psychometric test designed for international students. We encourage students to use their summer vacation to pursue camps and opportunities that will strengthen their college dossiers.
Class 12’s will be receiving information on the university application process on a weekly basis. Parents will be informed through official information sessions and informal meetings with the college counselor. Students will also be planning their university choices through individual meetings with the counselor. Several university presentations will be held within the school, but it is strongly recommended that students use their vacation times to visit campuses they are interested in. Students focusing on the USA will be taking SAT I and II and TOEFL exams at local exam centres. We also encourage each student to make the best possible use of the summer before their final year. It is a wonderful time to: finalize college visits, start the college application essays, consider a Mid IB course or do a volunteer program.
Class 13 is application year. All UK applications, through UCAS, are completed by half term and all US and other applications are completed before Christmas. Instruction is given on crafting strong application letters and the use of UCAS and the Common App. Individual meetings continue throughout the fall and winter term with the college counselor, but students need to be personally responsible for meeting their college deadlines. As May 1 approaches and students have to make their final selection, the counselor remains available to support and guide each individual.
